My Story Part 1

My First Job:

As you all know I am from Brazil. I started working when I was 15 years old, in Brazil my first job was at a computer school, where I had to convince people walking around the downtown area to come to visit our school. It was a very hard job, I worked under the hot sun every day for 8 hours and then at night I would go to High School.

I was 15, but very independent and with a big dream (since I was 8 years old) to come to America. For some reason, it was inside of me…I told my mom one day that I would go to the USA, which was very far from our reality. So, I worked at this computer school, then in another school and my goal was to learn English first, because how would I communicate in the USA without English? My parents could not afford my studies and were getting a divorce at the time. I started college and had to pay out of my pocket to do so.

So, my idea was to start working at a language school and take free English classes. While working as a sales rep for a company, my manager and mentor at the time offered me a job at a different place, where he was offered a job as well. He told me the place was a language school, and that I would work there selling English courses for them.

Oh My! I was so happy that I could just say ‘YES’! I got the job that I wanted. I was so excited because 2 years ago I went to that same school asking for a job, which the owner told me I was too young to work there. Now I was sitting by her desk 3 years later being contemplated for being the best salesperson at her school. I started my classes right away, I worked during the day, went to college at night and on Saturday I took my English classes.

Studying English is not an easy task, specially at that time, I was so busy with work and college projects that on Sundays I did not wanted to do my English homework, I just wanted to sleep. But I knew what I had to do to get where I wanted. So, I did it anyway. I worked as hard I could to do the things that I wanted.

What about you? Have you tried to learn a second language and thought it was difficult? What is the most difficult thing about it in your opinion?
